Details

Sesame is a crop that has been cultivated for centuries, and in fairy tales it is associated with mysticism and unique properties. Its history spans the ancient world and the beliefs of people from the Babylonian period to the Roman era. It was believed that a mixture of sesame and honey was the key to youth and health, and Roman soldiers used sesame to maintain their energy and strength.

Sesame production was an important livelihood in the Eastern Rhodopes and Sakar, and although interest in it has waned over time, it is now resurging.

Sesame tahini has amazing health benefits. It is full of amino acids, minerals such as silicon, phosphorus, copper, potassium, magnesium and vitamins such as E, B1, B2, B6 and PP. It is recommended as a healthy food that supports the functions of the body. It treats diseases and is especially beneficial for bones, the cardiovascular system and even for strengthening the nerves.

Our village of Plevun preserves a rich history and culture. The old traditions of growing the local sesame variety are still alive here, and tahini is made as it once was – in an oven and on a stone mill.
